Hi, guys. Since NFL Europe folded, almost no one in the US gives attention to american football in Europe (unless is that time of the year when happens the NFL International Series). There are, atleast, 31 international and/or first division leagues in Europe (most of the countries have multiple leagues were the top teams play in the first division and the others play in division 2, 3 or regional leagues depending of the country). The AFL (Austria), GFL (Germany), Mapple League (Finland), IFL (Italy), Superserien (Sweden) and NLA (Switzerland) are the most popular leagues. Every year multiple international club leagues happen to decide the best european team, in 2014 were played 4 international club leagues (note that some of them may not comeback in 2015 because of the new Europe governing-body IFAF Europe):
Big 6 Europe - The league was founded in 2014 and was played by the Europe's top 6 teams to decide who's the best team in Europe. 3 teams from Germany, 2 teams from Austria and 1 team from Switzerland competed in this league. The final was between the current champions Berlin Adler and the New Yorker Lions. The league was affiliated to the ex-governing-body EFAF.
EFL - The oldest active international leagues was played by 1 team from Netherlands, 1 from Spain, 1 from Switzerland and 3 from Germany. The final was between the current champions Badalona Dracs and the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes. The league was affiliated to the ex-governing-body EFAF.
IFAF Europe Champions League - The league was founded in 2014 and showed a new way to organize a internacional league. Was play by 2 teams from Sweden, 1 from Finland, 1 from Denmark, 1 from Austria, 1 from UK, 1 from Italy, 3 from France, 1 from Spain, 1 from Serbia and 1 from Turky. The league had the biggest number of participating countries from any international club league in 2014. The final was between the current champions Helsinki Roosters and the SBB Vukovi.
CEFL - The league exclusively for the top Central Europe teams had 1 team from Hungary, 1 team from Austria, 1 from Slovenia and 3 from Serbia. The final was between the current champions SBB Vukovi and the Ljubljana Silverhawks.
Now that you know more about the top domestic leagues and international leagues is time to know more about what makes them alternative leagues that you can enjoy overseas. Most of the top teams and leagues have their games broadcast online (the Mapple League have their games broadcasted on national TV that you can see in streaming sites), you just need to watching the social media sites of the teams and leagues or reading blogs about american football in Europe (www.touchdown-europe.com and . When the year starts the NFL is playing the playoffs but in Europe football is starting or close to start. The first leagues to play in the year is LPFA (Portugal), LNFA and LNFA Elite (Spain) in January. Every country have their own starting and ending dates, rules, etc. Don't you want to see football all year? Well you can watch in the end of Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall the european leagues and watch the NFL the rest of the year.
But there's more (well this is sounding like a tv commercial ahah) if you're a talented player that didn't get a chance to play in NFL or want new experiences and cultures, you can play in Europe PROFESSIONALLY! In most countries and division 1 leagues, this imports (that's name we give to a player coming from US or other european country to play in the team professionally) get a monthly salary (the value depends on the team and league), housing, insurance and other benefits depending on the team (gym, transportation, paid meals, etc.). Most of the teams scout via Europlayers (www.europlayers.com), a website were you create your profile with all your stats, team historic, biography, highlights, teams were you played or play currently, etc. There you can see the teams profiles and contact them or get contacted by them.
I leave here a video about the website:
Some talented players from the NFL and College Football play in Europe as imports and used the website to find the teams some players like Aki Jones, Charles McCrea, Reuben Droughns (as a head coach), Emmanuel Moody, Matt Bassuener, Tunde Ogun and Mike McMahon.
Some examples, of teams and what they offer to imports:
- This are the housings ang gym conditions that the players of Lura Bulls (at the time AFC Show) from Norway get:
- The conditions that the imports from Thonon Black Panthers from France get:
- The trailer of the webseries "Comets Life" about the life of the imports of the Allgau Comets from Germany (The episodes will be available in the "Comets Life" youtube channel and the 1st episode is out):
The european leagues should have their own board in this forum so we can discusse about the leagues, the trades, the games, the future of the game and how good it would be to see "that guy", that's playing in "that team", playing in NFL or other US league. The board could be called "Football overseas" , "Outside US Leagues" or whatever.
I'll be waiting for your opinions, questions and comments about subject.
Peace.
