Doesn't look good for the Baltimore Mariners, they forfeited two games over a dispute with the Baltimore Arena over rent. The Mariners clinched a playoff berth, but they may be playing them on the road I think if they don't fold. I'm not expecting them to return to Baltimore next season.
There have been rumors of an arena being built in one of the parking lots of the Shady Grove Metro station in DC suburbs of Gaithersburg that would hold 8,000 fans. If it was built the Arena Football League would return to the area since the Commandos folded in the early 90s. There might be a winter tenant such as MASL Arena soccer, minor league hockey or a Wizards D-League hoop team. It would also be used for high school graduations. I'm against it being built because it would take away parking and the station is already crowded during rush hour, takes about 12 minutes to exit.

Belated congratulations to the Baltimore Mariners who beat the Cape Fear Heroes with 2.8 seconds left to win the AIF championship. This is the city's second championship in the league, they had to cancel their two home games, due to financial problems and played all their playoff games on the road. They have been in fourth of July parades, but no one has answered on their Facebook page about if they will stay and play their home games in the Baltimore area next year. The Baltimore arena is in sorry shape and may have been one of the reasons that LFL Charm team folded, there was talk that they would rebuilt part of the Convention Center to include an 18,500 seat arena as a replacement, but the President of the construction company that would help fund it died late last year and I heard nothing since then.

If course it is, thus why everyone still craves alternate leagues to the NFL and ignore Arena ball unless it is in their home city. Wait, what? Everyone still craves alternate leagues to the NFL? Until they actually get one, I presume you mean. Because they don't actually seem to act on those cravings. All the NFL-bashing that goes on here, holy cow. Yes, give us teams with far inferior players who get a couple of weeks of training camp and play under a four-man coaching staff on weeknights in Omaha. Gotta have that. Arenaball is too offense-oriented. There's no defense to speak of. That gets a bit boring after a time. It's just basketball. It was a nice alternative at first ("Look, footballs in the air all the time!"), but defense is a part of football and needs to be represented, not marginalized. The NFL had its highest points per game average ever (since the 1960-61 AFL) last year, but not by a lot. NFL scoring is up about 4 and a half points a game over 1984. That's it. It dipped below 40 a game for three years in the early 1990s, but remained between 40 and 45 every year until 2012, when it inched over the 45 ppg mark. The UFL averaged 42.6, 41.9, 41.3 and 45.0 points per game in its four almost-seasons. They were 0.35 ppg behind the NFL in 2009, 2.17 behind in 2010, 3.11 behind in 2011 and 0.51 points per game behind in 2012. It's not like the UFL was some shining example of Football For People Who Love Defense. It only seemed that way because they had craptacular quarterbacks and skill position players.
